Ghirardelli has been crafting chocolate for over 168 years. From chocolate bars to chips to sauces, they deliver truly exceptional chocolate. This classic Mocha Latte recipe uses Ghirardelli Black Label Chocolate Sauce for a sweeter profile that’s perfect for balancing the strong espresso flavor in mochas. The Black Label Chocolate Sauce is also available in squeeze bottle format, which is great for lining the glass or drizzling on top of whipped cream.

What is Mocha?
Mocha is a chocolate-flavored coffee latte. The chocolate used is always cocoa and a type of sweetener which could be in a powder, syrup, or sauce form. Variations may also include different types of cocoa: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate.

How to make a mocha?

Espresso

The basics of a mocha, or a mocha latte, is espresso, steamed milk, and chocolate all layered and served hot. Espresso should be brewed in an espresso machine with finely ground coffee beans. Ideally, the whole milk is used which will produce the most creamy frothy drink. However, lighter milk or plant-based alternatives may also work. For a sweet mocha beverage, select chocolate with 60% cacao or lighter; otherwise, your drink may be bitter.

How to change to a mocha frappe recipe:
If you prefer a cold blended beverage instead here is how you can recreate a Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino! Take all the same ingredients from the mocha recipe but you will need to let the brewed espresso cool down to room temperature and do not steam the milk.

First, add ice cubes to a blender and crush. Then add all the other ingredients and blend well. That’s it! Pour into a glass and top with whip cream and Ghirardelli chocolate drizzle. Get some energy on a hot day with this cool blended drink.

How to change to an iced mocha:
You can still enjoy a cold mocha without a blender. Just like the frappe you want to take all the ingredients from the mocha latte recipe but allow the espresso to cool down and skip the steaming step. Mix the ingredients together and pour over ice. So simple!

Make it a white chocolate mocha
Do you love the Starbucks White Mocha Latte? To make it, swap the Black Label Chocolate Sauce with Ghirardelli White Chocolate Sauce for a lighter sweeter latte.
