3 Essentials Every Bartender Needs

By: Sabrina Huda Sanchez

Whether you're an amateur or a professional, there are some things every bartender needs. Bartending tools are almost as important as the spirits and glasses you select. A complete bartending tools kit may include many other items to make preparation easier or items for less common specialty drinks. To make the majority of highly requested cocktails, check out this shortlist of items you will need.

Cocktail Shaker
The cocktail shaker is the quintessential tool in a bartending kit. You can try to make drinks without it but your martinis just won’t be up to James Bond standards. What makes a good cocktail shaker? The cap should fit securely over the built-in strainer and the built-in strainer needs to maintain a tight seal on top of the metal tin. You wouldn’t want to be shaking a drink and suddenly have liquid spewing out.

Pro tip: Always put the strainer on the tin first then the cap. If you place the cap on the strainer first then you will not have a good seal.

Cocktail Jigger
The cocktail jigger, or cocktail measuring cup, is two-sided with either a half ounce and 1-ounce side or a 1-ounce and 2-ounce side. Use this to make it easier to portion out spirits and follow drink recipes. Get the perfect drink every time with this tool.

Bar Spoon
Some drinks are shaken and some are stirred. For stirred drink recipes, you need a bar spoon. This long-handled spoon is tall enough to be dipped into a hurricane glass and textured to create a better mix of ingredients. Such a simple and effective tool that you need in your arsenal.
